HOW TO CURB RURAL URBAN MIGRATION IN GHANA?

HOW TO CURB RURAL URBAN MIGRATION

One of the major forms of migration that tends to create problems in all developing countries is that of rural-Urban migration. Since we recognize that this form of migration is a major problem, solutions have to be provided in order to prevent the occurrence of over population at the receiving regions.

I found out that rural-urban migration in Ghana is caused by lack of electricity supply, leaving the rural areas in total darkness, very limited telecommunication facilities, no pipe borne water and lack of employment in the rural areas. This leads to the movement of most rural folks to the urban areas where there are better educational facilities, better hospitals, and better job opportunities. I suggest that before this issue can be curb, we need an equal distribution of resources between the rural areas and the urban areas
This will actually curb the situation of overpopulation in the Urban areas.
If the necessary social amenities are provided in the rural areas no one will be willing to come to the urban areas for greener pastures.
The solutions to the problems of rural-Urban migration include:
Provision of social amenities: The provision of social amenities such as water, electricity, cinemas, roads and telephones in rural areas will go a long way in reducing the rate at which people move to Urban areas since those are the major reasons they migrate if the are provide to there will be no need to travel.

2. Transportation of traditional agriculture to modern agriculture: This will enable the people to engage in agriculture as the system will make farming interesting, easier and faster and it will go long way to conserve the energy of the people. This means less work more efficiency.

3. Establishment of Industries: The establishment of industries, projects and businesses that will absorb the rural working population and reverse labor movement will go a long way in reducing rural-urban drift. As a project where the current government is embarking on popularly known as 1D1F one district one factory where every district is entitled to one factory it will go a long way to provide the needed employment in localities and will reduce the rural urban drift.

4. Establishment of educational institutions: The establishment of colleges and other institutions of higher learning in rural areas will also help to reduce movement to urban centers.

5. Establishment of corporate branches: Government departments, business firms and financial institutions should be encouraged to establish their branches in rural areas.

6. provision of recreation facilities: If recreational facilities like stadia, swimming pools, cinema houses, amusement parks, etc are made available in rural areas, this will reduce the propensity of the youths moving to Urban areas.
